Exciting Opportunity at MSK:  Medical Coding Specialist I - Outpatient 

 

At Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK), mission-driven teams support exceptional cancer care, research, and education. The Medical Coding Specialist I plays a vital role by transforming complex clinical documentation into accurate, compliant data that supports patient care, research initiatives, regulatory reporting, and financial integrity across inpatient and outpatient settings. 

 

Role Overview 

  • Analyze outpatient medical records to extract clinical, pathological, therapeutic, and epidemiologic data 

  • Apply ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding principles to ensure accurate and compliant clinical data 

  • Verify patient demographics, admission details, discharge data, and treatment information prior to coding 

  • Assign and sequence principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures at the highest level of specificity 

  • Ensure coding accuracy to support research, reimbursement, planning, statistics, and regulatory reporting 

  • Enter and maintain accurate coding data across multiple databases and information systems 

  • Complete assigned case volumes, corrections, and special coding projects within established standards 

 

Key Qualifications 

  • 2+ years of relevant clinical coding experience 

  • Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM coding, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology 

  • Experience in coding with Epic or other coding software  ( like 3M/Solventum Encoder), is a plus. 

  • Experience in coding ambulatory, methods of administration/ chemotherapy administration, clinical diagnosis and/or procedural coding is preferred 

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of protected health information 

  • CPC or CSS certification required

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet productivity standards under pressure 

  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, including effective team collaboration 

  • Strong information management and data entry capabilities across multiple systems 

  • Sound professional judgment and accountability in a highly regulated healthcare environment

  • Schedule: Flexible start between 6 AM – 10 AM EST 

  • Location: Remote 

  • Reporting To Supervisor, Clinical Data Specialist
