Construction Safety

Construction Safety

MSK’s growth as an institution has led to the expansion of our construction safety program. EHS is involved in all construction projects at MSK to ensure job sites and surrounding areas are safe during pre-construction, construction, and post-construction phases.

Emergency Management & Response

Our EHS team members are trained to respond to various emergencies, incidents, or issues, whether in New York City, New Jersey, Westchester, or Long Island. Any given time or day, EHS is the first point of contact for indoor air quality issues, fire alarms, life safety emergencies, floods or water leaks, gas leaks, physical safety issues, and more.

Additionally, our Emergency Management team plans and conducts exercises to continuously improve MSK’s strategies for handling any type of emergencies.

Environmental Management

Our Environmental Management program covers general environmental management functions and compliance, waste management, spills, oil handling and storage, air emissions, wastewater, and chemical use reporting.

Fire & Life Safety

EHS handles all matters related to fire and life safety training, drills, protection systems, extinguishers, hot work, event safety, and more. Our department assesses all instances of a possible impairment to fire or life safety to ensure appropriate interim measures are in place. EHS also manages fire system vendors responsible for testing and maintaining MSK buildings.

Hazardous Materials & Waste

EHS is the point of contact for all matters related to chemical, biological, and hazardous materials enterprise-wide, including general safety, handling, storage, waste, and spills not just in patient care space but in the hundreds of research and clinical laboratories within MSK.

Our wide-reaching chemical safety program addresses chemical storage and inventory issues, hazard communication, chemical exhaust ventilation, and other chemical safety-related issues.

Similarly, our biological safety program extends to all areas of MSK, including both clinical and research arms. EHS conducts biosafety assessments and training and is involved with the Institutional Biosafety Committee.

EHS conducts PPE assessments and all respiratory fit testing for the institution to ensure that our employees are protected from exposure to chemical and biological agents.

Health & Safety

EHS implements and oversees all programs related to health and safety, such as ergonomics, hearing conservation, PPE, physical hazards (facilities safety), injury prevention, and office safety. We also administer an Industrial Hygiene program to address exposure monitoring and control.

Regulatory Compliance

EHS’s responsibilities involve regulatory compliance, including all local, state, and federal environmental health and safety standards. EHS staff members are involved in inspections and permitting and provide resources and advisement in preparation for surveys or other regulatory activities.
