Role Overview:

An entry-level position that provides the employee the necessary training and experience to provide husbandry to laboratory animals; to understand the basics of animal health and disease; and to clean/sterilize caging and associated equipment required for laboratory animal housing and care. This is an entry level position, which assumes increasing competence through on-the-job and classroom training, and work experience. Works under the direction of Animal Care Technician -- Lead or Facility Manager. After acquiring the skills to provide the duties of this job satisfactorily and if the employee attains the certification level of Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) provided by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, the employee can be promoted to the Animal Care Technician, Certified job. Works in facilities maintained at MSKCC and occasionally WCM. Work assignments may include weekends and holidays. Hours may vary between 6 AM and 8 PM,
depending on assignment.

In this position, we expect that you will follow through on all duties as assigned: 

  • Process unclean caging and equipment in preparation for sanitization 
  • Assemble caging for use by other Animal Care Technicians 
  • Operate and maintain automated cage wash equipment and sterilizers 
  • Prepare acidified water bottles using an automated bottle filler and proportioner 
  • Receive, transport, process, store and label animal feed and bedding 
  • Disassemble, wash, and reassemble ventilated Thoren units 
  • Handle and provide husbandry to various species of animals 
  • Perform health checks and perform environmental monitoring and cleaning

Core Skills:

Requirements: 

  • The ability to lift and carry up to 55 lbs regularly. Frequent standing, grasping and holding items, reaching above shoulder; pulling pushing of heavy items; some regular crouching and kneeling. 
  • Willing to learn or already understand the basics of animal health and disease, the procedures required to clean/sterilize caging, and is familiar with the use and operation of equipment required for laboratory animal housing and care 

Pay Range: $22.42 - $28.77
