About Us:

The people of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) are united by a singular mission: ending cancer for life. Informed by basic research done at our Sloan Kettering Institute, scientists across MSK collaborate to conduct innovative translational and clinical research that is driving a revolution in our understanding of cancer as a disease and improving the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. MSK is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, who go on to pursue our mission at MSK and around the globe.

Role Overview:

Volunteers with the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Program will assist with day-to-day operations of The Lounge, a dedicated physical space for young adults at MSK ages 15-39. Volunteers will also promote programming to MSK inpatients in this age range.

Qualifications:

  • Between the ages of 18-39 years old.
  • Ability to work with teenagers and young adults in a medical environment.
  • Ability to work with supervision.
  • Ability to work from the Manhattan location.

 

Hours:

  • Must be available at least three consecutive hours Monday-Friday (between the hours of 11am - 5pm)

 

Responsibilities:

  • 1:1 and group interaction with young adult patients.
  • Inform young adult inpatients (in rooms) and their visitors about the AYA Program and The Lounge.
  • Greet visitors to The Lounge and assist them with accessing activities.
  • Assist in preparing for activities, participate as appropriate, and help clean up afterwards.
  • Provide activities and support to those unable to visit The Lounge.
  • Brainstorm and execute new projects and activities.
  • Update, organize, clean, and restock supplies as needed.
  • Prep for and support special events/holidays.
  • Assist with finding new resources, events and activities appropriate for this age group.
  • Maintain The Lounge census and logs for tracking and compliance.
  • Respond to patient's medical and other needs by informing the appropriate staff.
  • Communicate a professional image using verbal/non-verbal behavior and proper attire.
  • Apply appropriate communication skills with cultural awareness as defined in Volunteer Orientation.

 

Training

  • Must complete online training presented by Department of Volunteer Resources.
  • Must complete medical clearance.
  • Complete training for the Adolescent and Young Adult Program.
  • Track hours of service on Volgistics.
