Role Overview:

Coordinates, provides leadership for, and performs with proficiency the technical and related work of the Laboratory.

The LT3 specializes in one of six differentiated career pathways:
1. Quality Management Specialist (QMS): Participates in monitoring and reporting QC; assures compliance with regulations.
2. Laboratory Information Specialist (LIS): Oversees the laboratory's LIS responsibilities in collaboration with LIS management team.
3. Education Coordinator: Coordinates education program for Laboratory in collaboration with lab management.
4. Technical Specialist - Generalist: Provides technical expertise; assists in all areas of Laboratory as assigned by lab management.
5. Technical Specialist - Assays: Develops new methods and improves current methods in collaboration with lab management.
6. Technical Specialist - Instrumentation: Coordinates equipment validation, maintenance, and troubleshooting in collaboration with lab management.

Key Qualifications:

The Diagnostic Molecular Genetics (DMG) Lab located at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is seeking a Molecular Technologist, performing state of the art molecular techniques to investigate genetic and clinically useful molecular biomarkers for hereditary cancers.

As a Molecular Technologist you will:

  • Perform DNA testing on samples received by the laboratory for accurate clinical and test development reporting
  • Perform approved genetic and molecular biology laboratory testing procedures involving techniques such as DNA isolation, PCR, DNA sequencing, Real-Time Quantitative PCR, MLPA, and others
  • Review sample and quality control (QC) test performance reporting issues to the laboratory supervisor
  • Complete testing within approved test turn around times
  • Operate and maintain laboratory automation as directed to complete DNA testing procedures
  • Utilize approved laboratory computer hardware, software and online portals to complete and report test results
  • Ensure proper use of all biosafety protocols for safe specimen handling and experiment setups
  • Review assigned test requests thoroughly for errors, omissions, and other potential problems
  • Verify patient identification at all steps of every procedure and maintain complete accuracy
  • Follow unidirectional flow of specimen handling and experimentation to avoid contamination
  • Notify laboratory supervisor of discrepancies, troubleshoot, and document corrective action taken
  • Operate laboratory equipment under approved safety guidelines and according to approved procedures
  • Perform necessary equipment checks, performance testing, preventive maintenance, and QC on equipment per laboratory guidelines, as assigned
  • Help maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment per New York State Department of Health and Joint Commission clinical laboratory regulations

Requirements:

  • BS in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License Required, or ASCP Certification, eligible for NYS Technologist License
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong laboratory and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently, safely, and efficiently are essential
  • Ability to multitask, along with an orientation toward teamwork and leadership are preferred
  • Strong creative thinking and clinical laboratory problem solving skills

Hours: Monday-Friday, Day shift

Our DMG Lab hours are: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm

DMG Main Lab Location: MSK Main Campus, 1250 1st Avenue, Level-9, Room S-910, New York, NY. 10065.
