Memorial Sloan Kettering is seeking an Interpreter I to play a vital role in supporting communication between Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients, their families, and our care and research teams. In this role, you’ll help ensure clear, compassionate, and accurate communication throughout the patient’s care journey while also contributing to departmental projects, research, programs, and broader language access initiatives.
Role Overview
- Interprets and transmits accurately and in understandable terms, complex medical information from medical providers to patients, including interpretation of consent forms, diagnoses, during medical procedures and research initiatives, discharge plans and any other type of patient-related information.
- Independently assesses understanding of information conveyed and the need to ask for clarification or repetition if the message from either party is unclear.
- Interprets in the simultaneous and consecutive modalities according to national industry standards, including observing cultural norms as needed.
- Resolves most issues and questions that arise in daily responsibilities without direct supervision. Escalates more complex situations to the Language Initiatives leadership.
- Manages schedule and uses tools available to mitigate downtime in the event of cancelled assignments, informing the department of any changes in a timely manner.
- Cultivates an environment that promotes collaborative work relationships across the organization that will ensure seamless coordination of care and support for research studies and community services.
Key Qualifications
- 2-4 years of equivalent experience
- National certification in medical interpreting preferred but not required
