Role Overview

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases invites applications for a Service Chief of Clinical Microbiology. The Clinical Microbiology Service currently consists of the Service Chief, two clinical microbiology faculty, three supervisors, and more than 45 technologists, technicians, and clerical personnel, and supports the Memorial Hospital and MSK regional sites located in New Jersey, Westchester, Long Island.  The Department and the Clinical Microbiology Service is committed to applied and translational research through active collaborations with internal and external scientists, clinicians, and industry experts to develop innovative laboratory methods and leverage advances in technology to improve patient care. Our faculty play a vital role in clinical research and clinical trials.  MSK provides diverse educational opportunities to develop further the skills and ambition of our scientists, laboratory directors, laboratory managers, medical technologist, and technicians. The Clinical Microbiology Service offers a two-year Clinical Microbiology Fellowship providing training for doctoral-level scientists interested in acquiring knowledge and skills necessary to direct a clinical microbiology laboratory.

Extensive experience in high complexity clinical lab/director functions in support of an academic medical center clinical services and translational programs is preferred. The successful candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere, and a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Candidates are expected to develop a research program based on translational and collaborative research in specialties aligned with clinical pathology. The position will report to the Chair, Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine, Kojo S.J. Elenitoba-Johnson, MD.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical: The position includes a clinical commitment to the Clinical Microbiology service at MSK. The service and its laboratories are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and offer comprehensive testing in bacteriology, antimicrobial susceptibility, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, and infectious disease serology using both conventional methods and cutting-edge technologies such as real-time PCR, solid and liquid microarrays, nucleic acid sequencing, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The attending faculty members provide consultations on selection of diagnostic tests and interpretation of test results to all MSK clinical teams. The individual will be responsible for mentoring, directing, instructing, and supervising attendings, fellows, managers, supervisors, and technologists providing diagnostic service, advising, and consulting with clinical teams.

Research: Development of a creative and productive research program in relevant fields of interest leading to publication of results in high quality, peer-reviewed scientific journals is a fundamental requirement of the position. Emphasis is on test method development relevant to cancer care. The successful applicant will obtain extramural funding and direct collaborative research with clinical colleagues across the institution. It is expected to develop collaborations with clinical staff to study and improve biomarker detection and analysis in cancer patients. Subspecialty training in method development and emerging modern technologies in the field of microbiology is preferred.

Teaching: The candidate will be participating in the training of Clinical Microbiology and Lab Medicine fellows and clinical pathology residents through lectures, clinical supervision and mentorship as well teaching of laboratory technologists and supervisors.

Service: MSK has a system of shared governance. Active participation in committees, professional organizations, continuing education, and other appropriate outlets is required. The department has a faculty mentoring program in which participation is expected.

Key Requirements

  • Board-certified MD, PhD, or MD/PhD clinical pathologist with American Board of Medical Microbiology certification
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in Clinical Microbiology and having obtained or having ability to obtain all relevant NYS COQ.
  • Appointment to the rank of Associate member or higher (equivalent to Associate Professor) is expected, commensurate with experience.
