About Us:
The people of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) are united by a singular mission: ending cancer for life. Our specialized care teams provide personalized, compassionate, expert care to patients of all ages. Informed by basic research done at our Sloan Kettering Institute, scientists across MSK collaborate to conduct innovative translational and clinical research that is driving a revolution in our understanding of cancer as a disease and improving the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. MSK is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, who go on to pursue our mission at MSK and around the globe.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is one of the world’s premier cancer centers, committed to exceptional patient care, leading-edge research, and superb educational programs. Blending research with patient care is at the heart of everything we do. The institution is a comprehensive cancer center whose purposes are cancer treatment and control, advancing biomedical knowledge through laboratory and clinical research, and training scientists, physicians, and other healthcare workers.
The Division of Radiotherapy Physics within the Department of Medical Physics has two opportunities available at the Assistant or Associate Attending Physicist level (equivalent to Assistant or Associate Professor) to support radiation oncology physics services at the MSK Manhattan facilities.
- One position focuses on providing routine clinical support in brachytherapy and external beam radiation therapy, as well as the implementation of novel technologies and procedures, particularly in brachytherapy. Prior experience in brachytherapy, clinical software development and machine learning is preferred but not required.
- One position focuses on providing routine clinical support in external beam radiation therapy and the implementation of novel technologies and procedures, particularly in the areas of motion management and IGRT. We are particularly interested in candidates experienced in IGRT, motion management, and automation, as well as candidates interested in clinical software development and machine learning techniques in radiotherapy.
A significant contribution to our clinical research and development activities is expected.
- Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan
- External beam Equipment: 1 Varian Accela linac, 1 Elekta Unity 1.5T MR-linac, 2 Varian Ethos adaptive linacs, 2 Varian Edge linacs, 6 Varian Truebeam linacs, 1 Xstrahl superficial radiotherapy unit, 2 Siemens and 1 Philips CT simulators, 1 Siemens PET/CT, 2 Philips 3T MR simulators dedicated to radiation oncology procedures, and state-of-the-art inter- and intrafractional imaging and motion management capabilities.
- Brachytherapy program: equipment includes 3 Varian Bravos afterloaders and one Papillon+ brachytherapy unit. Dedicated facilities include a brachytherapy procedure room for HDR and LDR procedures with CT and ultrasound capabilities and access to MRI; a treatment room for non-procedural HDR treatments; and two additional operating rooms for other brachytherapy procedures and IORT. The brachytherapy team also supports busy eye plaque and brain LDR programs. The MSK brachytherapy program treats more than 700 patients per year.
The Manhattan physics team comprises over 75 staff, including faculty-level physicists, MS physicists, and dosimetrists.
We embrace the OneMSK philosophy. MSK Manhattan is integrated seamlessly into our broader MSK network. We provide the same high standard of care and contribute to fundamental and translational research, working in harmony with all MSK facilities.
MSK has a large, cutting-edge program in all aspects of radiation oncology physics that seeks to improve the clinical effectiveness of radiation therapy in partnership with radiation oncologists, radiologists, and other medical professionals. Many programs in radiation therapy research and development are ongoing, including:
- Brachytherapy: AI-assisted applications; development of patient-tailored applicators; improved utilization of multimodality imaging; automation of QA and other tasks.
- The development and clinical use of predictive models (tumor control and normal tissue complication probability) in treatment planning
- Improved treatment planning optimization algorithms
- Integration of MR and PET imaging into radiotherapy decision-making and treatment planning
- 4D imaging and motion management
- The development of informatics-based adaptive radiotherapy processes
- AI and Automation in radiotherapy
- Innovation in quality and safety for patient care.
The successful candidates will also be part of our enterprise-wide radiotherapy physics team. MSK enterprise-wide radiation oncology and medical physics resources include over thirty linear accelerators, one MR-Linac, six HDR units, CT Simulators, PET/CT Simulators, MRI Simulators, and state-of-the-art inter- and intra-fractional imaging and motion management capabilities. We work collaboratively to support our institutional philosophy for all facilities to provide outstanding treatment quality and contribute to the overall mission of MSK to advance the state of cancer care.
Candidates are required to have:
- Ph.D. in physics, medical physics, or a related field.
- Eligible for ABR certification or fully certified by the ABR or an equivalent organization
Candidates should have:
- A strong clinical background and demonstrated ability and interest in clinical research.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong coding experience and demonstrated ability to write code for R&D are preferred.
