In a competitive labor market, one of the biggest challenges that any company faces is recruiting talent to choose their organization over all others.
MSK Celebrates Plant Operator Apprentice Graduates
In late May, MSK celebrated the first graduating class of the Plant Operators Apprenticeship and Training Program. 12 individuals were selected for this highly competitive program, which began in 2017. They have completed many months of intense training on-site at MSK and in the classroom at the Refrigeration Institute.
How it Started
In 2017, the Facilities Operations department at MSK recognized a gap in hiring needs for Plant Operators. MSK received a $400,000 grant under the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority’s Workforce Training Program to create a new Apprenticeship and Training Program for Plant Operators at MSK. We hired a group of individuals into the program who had no prior HVAC experience. These individuals studied in the classroom at The Refrigeration Institute and trained alongside MSK staff across our various locations. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, all successful candidates will be adequately trained to test and pass the FDNY Refrigeration System Operating Engineer certification exam and to meet the legal requirements of Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act related to the maintenance, servicing, repair, and disposal of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants.
At the end of the training program and passing of the certification exam, Plant Operator Apprentices will have obtained the skills necessary to be promoted to a Plant Operator position at MSK.
One Special Story
In 2017, Jose Monroig was working as an Environmental Service Aide in the Zuckerman Research Laboratories at MSK. In a twist of fate, he learned about the Plant Ops Apprentice program on the last day applications were being accepted and quickly submitted his materials. He shares that after being accepted for the program, he wondered how he would manage long days with work, school and sacrificing precious time with his family as well. During the program, Jose and his Apprentice-mates were challenged with complicated courses and varying teaching styles. They were able to get hands-on experience across many types of equipment at MSK facilities. All of this work prepared him to not only pass the exam but be ready to exceed the expectations that MSK has for our Operators. Jose successfully completed the program and passed the exam in March 2019. He spoke at the recent program graduation and celebration sharing the following.
“Thank you to MSK for creating an opportunity for 12 individuals to make a change not only for themselves but a generational change for their families. I hope you do something like this for more people in the future.” - Jose Monroig
Congratulations to all of the 2019 Plant Operator Apprentice Graduates. We know you’ll be great in your new roles at MSK!
